Sheltered Shrubs is the fictional hometown where Ginger's family and friends live. It is the establish setting of the show where majority of the series' episodes take place. It is located in the suburbs of Connecticut and is based on the village of Larchmont, NY, where series creator Emily Kapnek grew up.
History[]
Sheltered Shrubs is the village where Ginger Foutley and her family live in. She along with Dodie, Macie and Darren attend middle school at Lucky Jr. High and then graduated to Lucky High School. Carl and Hoodsey attended Lucky Elementary School until they graduated to middle school. The school campuses are right next to each other. Courtney and her brother Blake lived in a neighborhood called Protected Pines until the arrest of their father occurs in The Wedding Frame. In Blizzard Conditions, the city faced a heavy snow storm. The town is filled with all types of locations such as Flickarama Plex, Cheese Plate Factory, Magic Shop, etc.
Sheltered Shrubs is located in the fictional Winslow County, named for revolutionary war hero Nathaniel "Lucky" Winslow. The three schools attended by the kids, all called "Lucky", are also named after the war hero.

- Sheltered Shrubs resembles several real towns in Connecticut, including Old Greenwich and Sandy Hook.
- Despite Lois Foutley having a New England accent, Emily Kapnek always felt the location of Sheltered Shrubs was in the suburbs of New York City because she grew up in the suburbia areas.
- The zip code for both Sheltered Shrubs and Brittle Branches, seen on a letter Ginger received from her father, is shown to be 06930. This zip code is close, but not identical, to many real-life zip codes in Stamford.
- In The Nurses' Strike, Sheltered Shrubs is shown to be located fairly close to New York City.
- For some reason, a lot of the homes in Sheltered Shrubs have window A/C units but no central air, as seen in Heat Lightning. Two residences confirmed to have central air are Brand Higsby's parents' house and Dr. Dave's condo. It can also be presumed that The Gripling Mansion, the Bishop residence, the Lightfoot home, and Ginger's new house have central air. Most of the homes in Sheltered Shrubs (including the old Foutley home) seem to have been built before central air was commonplace.
